Tips for riding a motorcycle in the rain

Is it safe to ride a motorcycle in the rain?

Yes, if you know what you are doing. There are two main things you need to keep in mind when driving a motorcycle in the rain. First, surfaces get very slippery when it rains. Therefore, there will be much less friction and traction between the tires of your bike and the road. Second, you need to dress appropriately.

Here are a few tips that will help you stay safe riding a motorcycle in wet weather:

  1. Drive slower than you would when it’s sunny outside.
  2. Make sure that your tires are in great condition and are properly inflated.
  3. Avoid slick surfaces such as concrete and railroad tracks. When crossing a railroad, do it at a very slow speed and at a ninety degree angle to the tracks.
  4. Avoid puddles. While it may be fun driving through a puddle in the rain, you don’t know how deep the puddle is. You also don’t know if it’s made just of water or if there’s any oil and dirt in it that might cause you to lose control of your bike.
  5. Do not make any sharp turns.
  6. Wear specially-designed clothing that will protect your body from getting wet. You want your body to be able to breathe without water accumulating inside of your clothing.
  7. Wear a helmet, even if you don’t usually do so. At speeds above 30 miles per hour rain will hurt you.
  8. Avoid colored spots on the road. Most likely it’s not water, but oil.
  9. Apply rear brake more than you usually would. It is much easier to correct your bike when your rear wheel starts sliding and not the front one.
  10. Keep a distance between your bike and vehicles in front of you, because you need more time to stop in the rain compared to dry weather.
